A dramatic black and white photograph of the Union Jack flag which is erectred from a pole connected to the wall of a brick building.

Empire

When my attention was first brought upon this flag flying solitarily in the wind, I felt not a sense of pride or patriotism, but of disdain and stark disappointment. During a time when apathy and disillusionment with traditional politics bears heavy on the minds of most, even sailing the very colours of red, white and blue feels like a traitorous act. The Union Jack is rarely used outside of nationalistic sentiment, apart from in the context of the international community, and is increasingly being associated with right-wing populist movements which seek to weild nationality and territory as a weapon, often used to cast away those who do not belong.
